The Pentax ZD 10x50 ED binoculars feature high end optical elements including fully multi-coated optics with anti-glare properties, phase-corrected BaK-4 prisms, and ED glass that virtually eliminates chromatic aberration which all together produces very bright, clear images with high contrast and accurate color rendition. The larger 50mm lens also draws copious amounts of light to extend the usability in low-light conditions for use in dusk til dawn or even for astronomical use. Complimenting the ZD 10x50 ED binoculars is a rugged housing designed for a lifetime of outdoor use made of a magnesium alloy that protects against impacts while providing a slip-resistant rubber grip. The housing is also nitrogen filled and O-ring sealed for waterproof and fogproof performance with additional external lens coatings that helps repel dust, water and oil while out in the field for obstruction free viewing. Not to mention the ZD series binoculars are tripod mountable for longer sessions in the field. Included is a carrying case, strap, and eyepiece caps.

Understanding Optics & Coatings
ed-glass

ED glass: The Pentax ED series bring about a remarkably sharp resolution and contrast-rich image thanks to their Extra-low Dispersion Glass or ED Glass for short. It is used in the finest optics and used by professionals who require the details in an image to be clear and bright. The ED Glass reduces ‘color-fringing’ thanks to its ability to keep differing wavelengths of light together which also increases the resolution of the image so that all details are bright, and color-accurate as in the image above.

Multi-coatings

Multi-Layer Lens Coatings: This basically means that the lenses have received multiple layers of anti-reflective coatings on all air-to-glass surfaces which increase light transmission to produce a brighter image and therefore better low light performance. Anti-reflective coatings can make a really big difference on the brightness of the image produced. It is not unusual to look through binoculars with smaller objective lenses, but with higher quality anti-reflection coatings and seen them outperform binoculars with much larger objective lenses, but with fewer or no coatings. The diagram above shows how these coatings improve the transmission of light.
